What is Boba? Understanding the Pearls in Bubble Tea.

Chewy Pearls

Ever wondered what those chewy little pearls are in the bottom of your bubble tea? 🧋They're called boba and they're the star of the show in bubble tea drinks.

Boba, also known as tapioca pearls, is a key ingredient in bubble tea, offering a chewy texture that enhances the overall drinking experience. It is made from tapioca starch which is derived from cassava root.

Once boba has been cooked, it is usually sweetened with brown sugar since it is unflavored. The great part of that is it will pair well and soak up the flavor of whatever drink you put it in. It creates a unique texture within the drink that is part of the bubble tea experience. And as long as it is sweetened with sugar, it is vegan which makes it a great option for many people.

The Double Meaning of Boba: Pearls and Drinks

Boba can refer to the tapioca pearls OR it could be an umbrella term referring to bubble tea drinks in general. Many people will use the term interchangeably. We find that it can vary depending on where you’re located or live.

Fun Variations of Boba You Need to Try

Tapioca pearls are the OG. However, with the rise of bubble tea and its increased popularity, there are now many options for different kinds of boba. Not to mention other toppings, jellies, & add-ons!

What are the other kinds of boba? Well you might have seen some in your local froyo (frozen yogurt) shops already. Popping Boba or Bursting Boba are fruit flavored and come in different flavor options. Popular flavors include mango, lychee, strawberry, & kiwi. These are not your chewy tapioca balls, for sure. They definitely offer a different but very fun experience to drinking your bubble tea.

Another option is Mini Boba. Now Mini Boba is like the little sis to regular boba as it is still made from tapioca flour. So while the flavor stays consistent, you'll love the different texture that gives it a special touch compared to regular boba.

Crystal boba is another fun, also vegan, option and can be described to be a bit “crunchier.” It is translucent in color and typically lightly sweetened and citrus flavored. It is often made from agar agar or konjac plant.

All the options provide a variety of textures which is all part of the whole bubble tea experience.

Boba isn’t just a trend; it’s a versatile, delightful addition to bubble tea that offers a unique sensory experience. Whether you prefer the classic tapioca pearls or the modern popping boba, there’s a flavor and texture for everyone. So next time you sip on your favorite bubble tea, take a moment to appreciate the chewy, flavorful pearls that make it so special.
